Gray was the sister of 'Glasgow Girl' artist Norah Neilson Gray, and both attended the Glasgow School of Art before volunteering in a nursing capacity in the Great War; whilst her sister became a successful artist, including several important paintings depicting the War, Tina Gray used her wartime experiences as the basis for a medical career - studying at Glasgow University and becoming a surgeon (initially being one of only two female senior surgeons in Scotland).
